This olive-oil black soap is produced by Fer à Cheval, one of Marseille’s historic soapmakers still using the traditional cauldron process. The soap is made using olive oil and slowly cooked according to classic Marseille soapmaking methods.

Before specialised household cleaners became common, many homes relied on simple soap solutions prepared from traditional vegetable-oil soap. One of the most widely used of these was black liquid soap, known as Savon Noir.

Savon Noir is produced by slowly cooking vegetable oils in large cauldrons using the traditional Marseille soapmaking method. Unlike solid Savon de Marseille, potassium salts are used during the process, allowing the soap to remain in liquid form.

Diluted in warm water it forms a concentrated soap solution widely used for household cleaning, degreasing and washing. The soap cleans by dissolving oils and lifting dirt so that it can be rinsed away with water.
