The Hydrangea Midnight Pearl (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Midnight Pearl') is a striking mophead from the Midnight series, prized for its near-black stems and dark foliage that frame cool white flower heads through summer. This black-stem hydrangea brings real drama to a planting scheme, and as the pearly blooms age they soften to a gentle pink for a long season of interest.

Fully hardy across the UK, it is a dependable deciduous shrub that settles happily into borders and large pots alike. As a white mophead hydrangea it will not turn blue like the coloured forms, so you get clean, reliable colour whatever your soil. Leave the faded heads in place over winter, where they catch the frost beautifully and shelter next year's buds.

Water freely through the first few summers to build a strong root system, especially in containers where it dislikes drying out. In spring, cut back to a strong pair of buds to keep it shapely. It is superb at the front or middle of exotic borders, and just as happy in a large pot among your other plants for pots.
