About this gift
Known as aguacate in kitchens across the Caribbean and Latin America, the tropical avocado tastes a lot like Hass, only a touch sweeter, with smooth light yellow-green flesh that spreads like butter. It stays green when ripe, so skip the color check and give it a gentle squeeze; a little give means it's ready. Cut flesh browns more slowly than many avocados, and a half wrapped in foil keeps in the fridge for two to three days.
Ours grow on a farm in the Dominican Republic, and during its off season they come from Florida, where we're based.
